Revealer of Truth, Teacher

Revealer of Truth, Teacher

As I continue to study the titles and roles of the Holy Spirit, I am just struck by the truth that God gave us His Spirit. We have this deposit within us—an empowerment that equips us—as an expression of who God is, and I’m amazed at how much God loves us. He didn’t leave us alone. He didn’t tell us to figure it out on our own. He sealed us in Him with His Holy Spirit. Just be in awe for a moment at the wonder of God.

This week, we’re going to look at two new roles or titles attributed to the Holy Spirit in Scripture: the Revealer of Truth and the Teacher. Being a teacher myself and someone who really, really loves truth, I am incredibly excited for this week’s study. This world tells us that truth is relative…you do you…speak your truth…and it has left our heads spinning and our hearts yearning for something more. This world offers us many teachers and influencers, and one thing that I am so passionate about sharing with anyone who will listen is this:

You get to choose who the loudest voices in your life are.

Did you hear that? Just because we subject ourselves to all the noise out there doesn’t mean that it gets to be the loudest voice. We decide. We choose whose voice we will amplify and whose voice we will mute. I know there are times when it doesn’t feel like a choice, but listen to me for a minute: no one is forcing you to spend hours a day on social media. No one is making you binge watch the sexually explicit and emotionally charged shows on TV. No one is making you believe lies about yourself, others, and God. No one is cranking the volume on those songs in your car but you. We make those choices ourselves, and the voices that we elevate in our lives deeply influence us, whether we think so or not.

In a world desperate for a plumb line and seeking truth around every corner, we have been given a fast pass to the front of the line of truth in Christ…and it is through the Holy Spirit.

  • The Revealer of Truth

“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:12-16 ESV

We have the mind of Christ! Can you actually comprehend how incredible this is?!?! We don’t have to be shackled in doubt and uncertainty because the Spirit who lives in us reveals God’s truth to us about all things. We lack no good thing! We can think like Christ. We can respond like Christ. We can behave like Christ because the Revealer of Truth has taken up residence within us.

  • The Teacher

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” John 14:26 NLT

We looked at this verse a few weeks back when we studied the titles Helper and Advocate, but I love how this verse also speaks to the Spirit’s role of Teacher. Just in case the disciples were worried that they wouldn’t do it right or forget what they had learned or not know what to say (Anybody?), Jesus promised that the Spirit would teach them everything they needed to know. Everything. Once again, we lack nothing. We are not ill-equipped to share the Gospel with our unbelieving family, neighbors, or co-workers. We are taught perfect truth by the perfect Teacher, and He daily equips us with this truth to be influencers and changers in this world.

So, go out there today with confidence and boldness, not in your own ability, but in the supernatural ability that resides in you through the working of the Holy Spirit through you. If God is for you, who, my friends, can be against you?
