For some, the words to this beautiful hymn are very familiar. To others, they might be new. As I reflect on the devastating tragedy of today’s school shooting in Connecticut, the lyrics of this song, written well over 100 years ago, bring comfort to my soul. I can hardly read the news’ accounts of today’s events without tears streaming down my face.
Why? How?
It’s all that I can do to get on my knees and pray for the brokenhearted today, those grieving the loss of a young child, a friend, a teacher, a family member. I will not put my hope in this world, for it is fleeting and depraved. My hope will rest on the Solid Rock, Jesus Christ, my Lord and my Redeemer. And along with you, I await with eager expectation the hope of glory. Come quickly, Lord Jesus, come.
The Solid Rock by Edward Mote (written in 1834)
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
