When you think about the Holy Spirit, what comes to mind? What would you say if someone asked you who He was? Are you familiar with the different titles or names given to the Holy Spirit in Scripture? Do you know what the roles of the Holy Spirit are? Did you know that Scripture reveals much about the person and work of the Holy Spirit? So many questions, I know. Can you tell how excited I am to dive into this study with you?
For these next four weeks, we’re going to be looking at nine different titles given to the Holy Spirit, and as we study each of these and look to God’s Word to direct us in our pursuit of the Holy Spirit, my prayer for each of us is that there will be an awakening in our souls to all that He is and a hunger for more of the presence of God. That’s what Bible study does for me…it ignites something inside of me, a fanning into flame, an increased appetite for more of the Lord. To know God is to love God. That’s what we’re always after in Bible study.
Author of Scripture
Did you know that the Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture?
“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” 2 Timothy 3:16
The Bible tells us that it is inspired. Don’t you just love that? Man didn’t produce the Word of God—God did. There’s so much power in that. The word “inspired” means breathed out by God or God-breathed. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, inspired or breathed out the very words of the Bible through the hands of men. Incredible! Can you imagine being one of those chosen few to pen the pages of God’s Word? We can see such a beautiful attribute of God here. He could accomplish His every purpose without us, yet in His love, He chooses to use us.
Guide
Did you know that the Holy Spirit is our guide?
I love how God knows exactly what we need, better than we know ourselves. He knew we would need a guide, and so He sent His Spirit to dwell in us, guiding us from within into all truth. Just as the Holy Spirit guided the human hands who wrote the pages of Scripture, the Holy Spirit also guides each and every believer to know and understand its truth.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.” John 16:13
In Christ, we lack no good thing, including spiritual guidance to be able to discern truth from error. The Spirit guides us as we read the inspired pages of Scripture. What a blessing to have this wisdom in a world of folly. We don’t have to live confused and deceived lives. We have a perfect guide who guides us into all truth. This is the Holy Spirit.
