There’s nothing quite like singing about grace. We’re marked by grace, whether we ever fully understand it or not. People young and old are almost equally familiar with the words of the beautiful old hymn “Amazing Grace”. Why? Because the scandal of grace astounds us all. Undeserved favor is something unlike all other things. And when we stop for just a moment to remember what grace has done, our only response can be awe and wonder. On Saturday night, I stood in a room filled with over 5,000 people as we together shouted these words back to Jesus:
Too much to make sense of it all
I know that Your love breaks my fall
The scandal of grace, You died in my place
So my soul will live
Oh to be like You
Give all I have just to know You
Jesus, there’s no one besides You
Forever the hope in my heart
Death, where is your sting?
Your power is as dead as my sin
The cross has taught me to live
And mercy, my heart now to sing
I can hardly read through those words without a physical response. The power of death was defeated in the grace poured out for you and me on the cross.
Jesus in my place.
Jesus in your place.
The scandal of grace.
For those of you that fight to find five minutes of solitude in your day, allow me to help you in that pursuit.
