“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…”
Philippians 3:20
There’s no place like home, right? How many of you have said that or felt those words to be true the moment you walked through the doors of your home? Returning from a vacation, coming home after a long and hard day at work, collapsing on the couch and thinking, “There’s no place like home”. We go to great lengths to make our homes comfortable, inviting, and everything that we want them to be. For some, home is a haven, an escape from the world. We upgrade, remodel, enhance, and decorate this temporary dwelling, and the more we invest into these four walls, the more tied to this place we become. Home is an important place for many of us.
We make time for what is important, and we prioritize what we value. The above verse, then, begs the question, “How much am I investing in my eternal home?” Scripture makes it clear that our lives here on earth are quick, short, a vapor, a dust – we appear for but a moment, and then vanish. We are here for a purpose, and that is to bring God glory. Have you ever viewed your life in that light? You’re only here for a limited time, and with the time given to you comes a great responsibility: to usher into the Kingdom of Heaven as many as you possibly can by sharing the love of Jesus Christ with everyone you know.
This world is not our home, yet we live as if it is. We hoard, we buy more and more, we store up for ourselves these treasure that will not last, and we spend ourselves on things that cannot satisfy. Do we invest even half of that energy into our relationship with God and into our relationships with others that do not know Him? Do we live with an eternal perspective, one that reminds us daily that Heaven is what awaits those who embrace faith in Jesus Christ and live their lives for Him? Naturally, we need things in this life – food, clothing, shelter, etc. But are we losing our heavenward focus of the eternal in our pursuit of the temporary? As a child of God, your citizenship lies in Heaven. This earth is just a holding tank for you. How are you spending your time here?
