It is a devastating thing to witness moral failure in our Christian leadership in the church, and unfortunately, it happens far more than we’d like to admit. How do we respond to moral failure within the church? What do we do when our leaders fail and fall?
We fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2)
We lock our gaze on His face, where it should have been all along.
In the day and age that we live, Christian celebrity is an unfortunate reality. As the mega church continues to grow, we find ourselves flocking to the nearest one with the most well-spoken communicator, and suddenly we find ourselves following the messenger as opposed to the message. Do you see the difference? Every pastor, every Bible teacher, every Christian leader was appointed by God and is a mouthpiece for God and is just as much of a sinner and in need of God’s grace as you and I. When we elevate the messenger over the message itself, we find ourselves devastated beyond repair when our messenger falls.
Godly people will continue to do ungodly things. We are human. We are flawed. We are in constant need of grace. Fix your eyes on Jesus and trust in Him, not in a man. Put your hope in Christ, not in a person or a position. And pray for your leaders, pastors, elders, and teachers. They are targeted by the enemy of our souls more than you can imagine. Pray that they would flee from temptation and that they would guard theirs hearts and their minds in Christ Jesus. And remember this:
• Christ remains seated on the throne. He is not dismayed.
• God’s character is never altered by our misrepresentation of Him. Never.
• It’s not about the messenger. It’s about the message. Cling to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
