“The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
Being one that was born in the pew and raised in church (if you know what I mean), I always thought that singing was our responsibility, not God’s. We are the ones that are supposed to dress up, come to church on Sundays, and sing songs to God, right? I mean, that’s worship, isn’t it? You can imagine my astonishment when I came across this short but ever so sweet verse tucked in near the end of the Old Testament.
“He (the LORD your God) will rejoice over you with singing.”
When I think about singing to God in worship now, as an adult, I have a much different understanding of it. As a child, I only knew and understood so much. As I grew in my knowledge of God and His Word, it became clear to me that worship is a lifestyle. It’s not confined to the 15-20 minutes we give to it on Sunday mornings, and it isn’t limited to song. Singing is, however, one of the most enjoyable ways for me to express my love and worship to God. As I sing, joy fills my heart as I declare through song the things that I know to be true of the One I am worshipping. Does that make sense? We worship God in all sorts of different ways, but when it comes to singing His praises back to Him, ascribing worth to Him through our words, I can’t help but think that He smiles in response to the sweet sound in His ear.
So, the fact that God would sing over you and me should without a doubt just blow our minds! Is He worshipping us? Absolutely not! Rather, He is delighting in us. That’s right, you and me – sinful, fallen, broken, and faithless at times you and me. But to understand the love of God, we must grasp this very important truth. As God’s children, He takes great delight in us. He quiets our racing hearts with His steadfast love. He rejoices over each one of us when we turn to Him by faith with singing.
I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for a good romance. I’m all about the prince coming to rescue his girl while he sweeps her off of her feet. I love when the man pours his heart out in song for the one he loves. We swoon, ladies, you know we do. That is because we were meant to be pursued by a godly man. That is exactly why my heart is overwhelmed by this truth. God pursues you and I with His love by singing over us. Can you believe that? He sings with great delight over you and over me. And He never tires of it. Not ever.
Perhaps you need to be reminded today of the fact that God cherishes you. He delights in you. The failures of your past that you can’t seem to forget, the sins that you feel have left you marred for good, if you have embraced Jesus Christ by faith, our Heavenly Father sees nothing but radiant beauty when He looks down upon you. He delights in you and expresses that great delight in song. Know this today: you are loved by a great, awesome, and good God. Did you know that He sings? Yes, He does.

I heard somebody say a long time ago that when you hear the birds singing it’s God singing over you….I love that analogy and I’ve never forgot it….He does delight in us and there are reminders of that all around us every day….oh, by the way…I’m also a sucker for a love story with the happy ending 🙂
